Professional Bio

Emily Dwyer is CEO of Edge Effect (www.edgeeffect.org), a LGBTIQ+ humanitarian and development organization. Many years ago Emily was a radio journalist in Australia and Southeast Asia. This led to a humanitarian and development sector career, starting in 2004 in Afghanistan, focusing on humanitarian information, local media strengthening and peacebuilding. From 2008 Emily undertook regional and headquarters management roles with international organisations. After affirming herself as a trans woman she feared this career may be over. Instead, Emily co-founded Edge Effect to ensure that the rights, needs and strengths of people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions and sex characteristics (SOGIESC, aka LGBTIQ+) are addressed by the aid sector. Edge Effect now works globally to build the evidence-base, policy, program guidance, tools, partnership models and more to make that happen. Edge Effect works with LGBTIQ+ CSOs to strengthen their engagement with larger humanitarian and development actors, and works with donors, INGOs and UN agencies to challenge and support them to make LGBTIQ+ inclusion a reality. Edge Effect also directly implements donor-funded projects alongside LGBTIQ+ CSOs.
