Talk Description
Institution: ActionAid Australia, Shifting the Power Coalition and Feminist Humanitarian Network
From the Pacific to Asia to Australia, diverse women are on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Existing gender inequalities mean that women and their children are 14 times more likely to die after climate disasters. Women’s marginalisation from decision-making and leadership roles also results in climate policies and plans overlooking women’s needs and rights. Despite these challenges, women's movements and collectives are driving local and global action for change, working across the climate and humanitarian nexus.
This session will explore the critical role of feminist movement building in advancing gender equality, climate justice and humanitarian action at the national, regional and global level. Showcasing the real-world impact of feminist movements in implementing gender-transformative climate and humanitarian action as well as agitating for genuinely inclusive and gender just climate solutions, the session will offer a paradigm shift in how we conceptualise and organise for social change.
Panellists will share feminist movement building approaches that are led by those most affected, centred on trust building and foster cross-border partnerships and solidarity. They will demonstrate why the voices and demands of women from the Global South are critical in achieving global climate justice, and share learnings about how Australian organisations and movements can work in solidarity with Global South feminist movements, to foster the global climate ambition that the world so desperately needs.
This interactive panel will provide practical insights into how Australian organisations can build genuine and effective partnerships with feminist movements across the Global South to progress climate justice.
