Talk Description

Institution: OXFAM/ActionAid

Curious about what it means for the energy transition to be ‘just’? Join us for a session that challenges the assumption that a shift to renewable energy will be inherently fair or solely a domestic issue. While the concept of a just energy transition is often discussed within the context of national policies, our session will spotlight how Australia’s actions have significant and far-reaching implications beyond its borders. Just because an energy transition is happening does not mean it is equitable—justice does not happen automatically; it requires intentional actions and commitment. We will explore the necessary steps to ensure that the global shift away from fossil fuels benefits all communities, especially those most exposed to climate impacts.

We will look at the actions Australia must take to support a just energy transition both domestically and internationally. Our panel, featuring representatives from Oxfam, ActionAid Vanuatu, Jubilee Australia, and Seed Mob, will provide insights and real-world examples—on First Nation’s leadership within Australia, gender-just renewable energy projects in the Pacific, and the ethical challenges surrounding the mining of minerals essential for the energy transition. What does it truly mean for the energy transition to be "just," and how can we actively advocate for the Australian government to align its policies and practices with this global vision?

Expect an interactive session that begins with a brainstorming activity to capture your thoughts on Australia's influence in global energy transitions. This will be followed by a conversational-style panel discussion and an open Q&A, offering a space for you to engage directly with the panellists, share your views, and ask questions.

Don’t miss this opportunity to participate in a conversation around how we can work towards a just energy transition that benefits everyone, both within Australia and globally.
