Professional Bio
Ms Asenaca Nawaqalevu is an indigenous Urban & Regional Planner. She holds a BA Planning from Auckland University and Master of Urban & Regional Planning from Sydney University. She spent 17 years as City Planning Manager for the City of Suva. She is Course Co-ordinator in the field of Land Management & Development, at the University of the South Pacific. Her area of interest and research is on community planning, housing needs and management of customary land for indigenous people of Fiji (the ITaukei). Her empirical research on the ‘Vakavanua System’ or customary way of life on and over its traditional land is the beginning of self-discovery of the ingrained values and intricacies of land, its governance and its uses practiced through customary land governance.
