Rethinking Resilience: Is It Causing More Harm Than Good?

Panel - Featured

Talk Description

This session will take a closer look at the complexities of resilience-building, a concept that’s often seen as the cornerstone of development and humanitarian efforts. But is resilience always the solution, or can it sometimes mask deeper systemic issues?

Join us as we explore both the empowering potential of resilience and the unintended consequences it might bring. Our three panellists bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the discussion. Adelina Kamal was the first female Executive Director of the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance, and is currently a Steering Committee Member of the Southeast Asian Women Peace Mediators. Adelina will share her insights from her research into local resistance and resilience building in Myanmar and her experience leading humanitarian efforts in the Asia-Pacific region. Dr. Malaka Shwaikh is a Palestinian academic and consultant, currently working at the University of St Andrews, contributing a critical perspective based on her research in conflict zones across the Middle East and her lived experience. Finally, Razmi Farook, Regional Director for Asia and Humanitarian at ActionAid International will draw from her fieldwork experiences to explore the value of resilience building in a variety of contexts. We are very pleased to have Dr. Helen Durham, CEO of RedR Australia, moderating the discussion and bringing her deep knowledge and experience in the international humanitarian and development sector to help guide us through the conversation.

This panel promises a nuanced discussion that will challenge conventional thinking and offer fresh perspectives on how we approach resilience in today's complex world. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with experts who are shaping the conversation on the future of resilience-building!
