Talk Description

Institution: OXFAM in Bangladesh

The South Asia region is particularly vulnerable to the devastating effects of climate change, experiencing frequent cyclones, floods, and droughts. According to the Global Climate Risk Index 2021, Bangladesh is ranked as the seventh most disaster-prone country in the world. In 2024 alone, Bangladesh has faced three severe climate-induced events: Cyclone Ramal in May, severe flash floods and monsoons since August, and northcentral flood in October - impacting close to 6 million people.

Women and marginalized groups are often the most vulnerable to these climate hazards, yet they are frequently excluded from decisions on natural resource management, climate policy, and community resilience developments. In piloting a Feminist Climate Movement, Oxfam is harnessing the collective strengths and voices of women, girls, people with disabilities, indigenous people, and other marginalised groups to address climate and social inequalities.

Session Outcomes:
₋ Achieve a nuanced understanding of the interconnection between gender justice and climate resilience, enhancing the capacity to address these interconnected challenges effectively.
₋ Explore through a case study some challenges and successes of implementing a feminist climate movement in Bangladesh, gaining insights into context driven results.
₋ Learn from a grassroots organization in Bangladesh about the essential elements for creating and supporting a feminist social movement, understanding the local context and strategies that have been effective.

The online session will kick off with a compelling 10-minute keynote that dives into the critical intersections of gender and climate justice, highlighting why climate initiatives are incomplete without a robust focus on gender equity. Keynote will be followed by two more presentations showcasing movement building journey of Bangladesh within grassroots communities, leading to locally created and led solutions. Presentation would then be followed by a 20 minutes Q&A session with session participants
